Project Period aims to promote a Healthy, Sustainable and Dignified menstruation to women from low-income backgrounds and to break the taboo of periods in our society.
There are still many period-associated social and cultural restrictions practiced in India today. Poverty is one of the reasons that is limiting girls’ and women’s access to safe, environmentally, and economically friendly menstrual supplies. As a result, many adolescent girls and women don't have the essentials needed for a healthy menstruation and a good education or exposure for them to have a dignified one. Apart from these, there are some restrictions that girls self-impose for example participating in athletics, attending school, social gatherings etc. All of this is reinforcing gender inequality.
For this reason, Project Period has been having conversations with women and girls about menstrual health and the care of the cloth pads provided impacting over 500 women.
Since COVID-19 had a serious financial impact on families with low-income backgrounds, chances of pads not being in their list of essentials is was very high. I did a fund-raiser raising 1.66 lakhs, which allowed me to distribute more than 300 menstrual care packages containing four Eco Femme cloth pads, detergent and a soap in a reusable bag. I am also the youngest Brand ambassador of Eco Femme.
Project Period also works on not only educating girls but boys as well on menstruation hence breaking the taboo of periods in our society. For this, I have started two story series on my Instagram handle @projectperiod_by_samairaa
“Let’s talk, Period” (A story series where women and girls from all backgrounds express their thoughts and feelings on menstruation.)
“My First Period”(a mosaic of stories from boys and men, sharing their first experience of learning about periods.)
