PROJECT MAPPING LIVES

Sanaa Chandra (11C) and Nandinie Andlay (11H)

Project Mapping Lives was started due to the lack of quality public education in India. It is a social initiative through which we work with the underprivileged Balwadi students of grades 4 and 5, studying at our school. It was launched to bridge certain educational gaps in their educational system, by providing them with a space to explore social values and morals which are often left unaddressed. The standard of education must be addressed to create an egalitarian society. After reaching a basic standard of a good education, at least people can then be placed at an equal footing!

We aim to provide more holistic education to the underprivileged Balwadi students and enable them to question, reason, and reflect on the world around us while feeling heard and appreciated. We develop and deliver our own modules which focus on imparting important values such as breaking gender stereotypes, stopping bullying, saving our environment, etc. to theses students in order to supplement their prescribed syllabus in a manner that encourages them to think deeper and also have fun. Each module has 1-4 sessions over which a particular value is explored. Our sessions have discussions in a Socratic dialogue format, which facilitates opinion building. These discussions typically stem from stories we read them, videos, and pictures we show them, or activities we do with them, all based on a chosen value. To ensure that the students stay actively engaged, we also use learning tools like games, activities, and writing tasks to enrich their learning experience. To give them a creative space, we conduct sessions on story writing, art activities, and skits as well!

Due to the current circumstances, we have been posting a lot more on our website and social media about various important topics related to education, such as the RTE. We have also collaborated with an organization called ARU and are helping them by providing them with 'Back to school stationery kits' for the extremely underprivileged students that they teach. We have presently raised about 30k and are hoping to raise more so that we are able to assemble as many stationary kits as possible for the students whose families are currently financially struggling due to Covid-19 and are unable to provide so that their education does not stop due to a lack of resources and material.

Volunteer

We are looking for more volunteers to help with various exciting tasks such as write-ups for social media, research, graphic designing, creative work, editing, planning, and conducting sessions, brainstorming new ideas, and a lot more! Volunteers must be from grades 9-12
